The story
AirKit started one morning before I got ready for the day. I'm always drumming on the steering wheel, on my desk, heavy metal, hip hop, doesn't matter. I wanted to mess around with video tracking, so I figured why not turn my hands into drumsticks.
Setup came together fast, and everything since has just been me playing around, adding settings, chasing new sounds, and seeing how far I could push it. I love music but I'm no musician, so this lets me sit right in the middle of both.
Under the hood
- MediaPipe Hands
- Tracks both hands at 60fps and maps position and velocity to drum zones in the air.
- Web Audio API
- Fires drum samples with sub-10ms latency, velocity-sensitive so harder swings hit louder.
- Three.js
- Particle bursts on every hit, sized and colored to how hard you swing and which zone you strike.
